Introduction
This section, covering the years from 1839 to 1857,
explores Jane’s health during this time, and the triangular relationship
involving her, her husband and Lady Ashburton.

It has been alleged that
Jane’s ill-health made her unreasonably jealous and suspicious during
these years. Is this the case, or is it more likely that her husband’s
conduct provoked her distress, and worsened her health?
This is a lengthy story, covering eighteen years of
her life, and is divided into sections as follows:
-
Lady Harriet; Carlyle's first meeting;
Jane's first meeting; 1844-1846.
-
1846-47; the Carlyles quarrel; winter illnesses;
a neck swelling.
-
1848-52; Gossip; 1850;
1851: more quarrels.
-
1853-57; 1854: more deaths, less Lady Ashburton;
1855: troubles resume; a Journal and a Memoir; 56-57: Lady Ashburton's illness and death.
-
Summary and Conclusions.
